False seedling
- Definition and role in the reduction of phytosanitary products : the stale seedbed technique aims to promote the emergence of weeds in order to destroy them early before sowing or planting the main crop. This technique is based on conventional soil preparation and then on the destruction of weed seedlings (by mechanical, thermal or chemical weeding). Thus, the seed stock of weeds is reduced and savings in crop-selective herbicides can be made (delayed or avoided applications, reduced dosages).
- Against which pests? Weeds in priority, but also pests (eggs and larvae of white grubs, wireworms, corn flies) and diseases (rhizoctonia, pythium, phytophthora) by exposure to sunlight.
- On which crops? All tropical crops in the ground (sown or planted at high density on bare soil), particularly in organic farming.
- When ? One or more operations 2 to 3 weeks (depending on the weed species present) before sowing or planting the crop.
- In what conditions ? It is necessary to have favorable conditions for the germination of weeds (supplemental irrigation if necessary) and the passage of tools in the plot. Basal dressing should be applied before soil preparation.
- Regulations : none.
- Working time : between 2 and 3 hours per hectare (soil preparation and weeding) and per operation.
- Compatibility of alternative techniques with each other :
- +: physical weeding
- -: soilless culture .
