A longitudinal or transverse section of the pivot and the stem shows that the vessels show a pink coloration which rapidly evolves to brown.
Vitreous and gelatinous marrow, greenish in color, darkening and gradually liquefying under the effect of pectinolytic enzymes (figure 1).
Blackish rot in the lower part of lettuces (figure 2).
Wilting and collapse of lettuces, particularly close to harvest (figure 3).
Dark spots on leaves that progress to a wet, slimy, dark brown to black rot that can spread throughout the head. Affected salads can completely liquefy.
