- Symptoms :
- A longitudinal or transverse section of the pivot and the stem shows that the vessels show a pink coloration which rapidly evolves to brown.
- Vitreous and gelatinous marrow, greenish in color, darkening and gradually liquefying under the effect of pectinolytic enzymes (figure 1).
- Blackish rot in the lower part of lettuces (figure 2).
- Wilting and collapse of lettuces, particularly close to harvest (figure 3).
- Dark spots on leaves that progress to a wet, slimy, dark brown to black rot that can spread throughout the head. Affected salads can completely liquefy.

- Signs : altered tissues often give off an unpleasant odor; sometimes presence of a milky mucus on certain organs.
