Telluric fungi
The melon root system is susceptible to attack by several soil fungi, occurring singly or in complexes and causing often comparable symptoms. In many situations, in the absence of signs, it will be very difficult to identify the person (s) responsible for the root lesions observed without carrying out microbiological isolations.
In France, several of these fungi and stramenopiles have long been known to degrade more or less the roots of melon , such as several Oomycetes , Phomopsis sclerotioides , plants Pyrenochaeta lycopersici and Rhizoctonia solani . Others have been brought to light more recently and their impact on this production is not always clearly defined. This is particularly the case with Setophoma terrestris , and to a lesser extent Macrophomina phaseolina .
Outside of France, other fungi have also been implicated in plant dieback and root lesions, such as Monosporascus cannonballus * the most formidable , but also Rhizopycnis vagum and Acremonium cucurbitacearum .
Information and documents on telluric pests in vegetables can also be viewed on the application Biotel-Lég , do not hesitate to consult it!
* Note that we were able to associate for the first time in France in 2012 a Monosporascus sp. the dieback of melon plants in the south of France, this in complex with Phomopsis sclerotioides .
