Hail

Following heavy rains, accompanied by hail, it is not uncommon to observe damage in the vines linked to the impact of hailstones on the vegetation. The latter, by striking the leaves, canes and clusters, cause damage which can strongly affect the photosynthetic potential of the leaves, the resistance of the branches and the integrity of the grape berries (Figures 1 to 6)

Symptoms

  • The leaves have holes, tears and sometimes they are totally shredded.
  • Brownish, necrotic, longitudinal, canker and more or less suberized lesions appear on side of the branches the most exposed ; these sometimes break.
  • The berries may turn brown and shrivel or have bursts allowing Botrytis cinerea or other microorganisms responsible for rots develop there (see the rot of the bunch ). If the climatic conditions are humid in the days following the damage to berries, an anti-Botrytis treatment may be useful.
