Autoic and heteroic rusts of salads

Several rusts are reported in the salad literature. It seems that the same mushrooms have been described over and over with different synonymies. Also, it is not easy to form a precise opinion on the situation of rusts on salad. For the sake of simplicity, we will group all these rusts into two categories: autoic rusts (fungus cycle carried out on a single host) whose symptoms are more discreet and heteroic rusts (fungus cycle occurring on 2 different hosts) and which are detailed in the Heteroic Rust sheet .

The Italians report an autoecious rust, mainly on chicory, Puccinia hieracii var. hieracii (Röhl.) H. Mart. (1817) (syn. Puccinia cichorii, Puccinia endiviae ). It initially causes small pale yellow spots on the chicory leaves. Subsequently, these become covered with rust-colored pustules (uredosors), then dark brown (teleutosores) (Figures 1 and 2). This rust would be encountered in various Mediterranean countries.

Another autoecious rust, Puccinia maculosa Schwein. (1832) (anc. Puccinia prishis ), has been described in Australia on lettuce and chicory.

In France, an autoecious rust, possibly Puccinia hieracii var. hieracii , has been found sporadically on lettuce many years ago. Currently, only the symptoms of heteroic rust are sometimes observed on lettuce.
