• Special requirements : plant of long days but differs according to the cultivars and some are insensitive to the length of the day. Temperatures above 27°C are very detrimental to growth, the lentil is not at all suited to tropical areas at low altitudes, it is very sensitive to salinity. It is cultivated and famous in the Cirque de Cilaos in Reunion between April and September (austral winter).

Lentils dried at a moisture content of 11-14% can be kept for many months in a cool, dry environment away from pests (weevils, etc.).
