Poaceae

Poaceae, also called Gramineae, is a family of monocotyledonous plants which includes many species, including cereals. Of cosmopolitan distribution, they present a major economic interest, which provides a large part of the food of humanity. Only sweet corn, or sweet corn ( Zea mays L. convar. saccharata Koern.), interests us. Unlike field corn varieties, which are harvested when the kernels are dry, sweet corn is picked before full maturity and prepared and eaten as a vegetable, rather than as kernels.
