Symptoms of Choanephora cucurbitacearum on Cucurbitaceae

  • Organs attacked :
Leaves Flowers
Fruits Stems

  • Symptoms :
    • Colonization of senescent petals and destruction of whole flowers which rot, brown or even blacken.
    • Abortion of young fruits; moist lesions on fruits (initiating from senescent sepals or remnants of floral parts, wounds) rapidly evolving into moist and soft rot causing the tissues to brown more or less (figures 1 - cucumber) (figures 2 to 5 - zucchini) (figures 7 to 9 to 5 - melon) (figure 10 - patisson).
    • Damp, dark green to brown lesions on stems (in the cortex in particular) causing leaf wilting and drying.
    • Wet damage on leaflets and on leaves developing into rot (figure 6 - courgette).
  • Signs : a blackish and airy mold more or less covers the rotten fabrics. Fruiting bodies in the form of tiny black pinheads are visible (figure 11).
  • Possible confusion : rots on fruits with Mucorales ( Rhizopus , Mucor ), Botrytis
