Main symptoms

The intensity of symptoms of jaundice caused by the  Beet pseudo-yellows virus (BPYV), can vary greatly depending on the variety and age of the infection. In melon, symptoms begin with a few yellow on older leaves, followed by interveinal yellowing patches of the entire leaf where only a few green spots may persist. Yellowing can affect the middle leaves or even the entire foliage in the most susceptible varieties. The earlier the infection, the more leaves affected. Old leaves tend to thicken and become brittle when folded.
Yield losses can reach 30% of the harvest without having any impact on the quality of the fruits.

Symptoms develop the same in cucumber and zucchini. These symptoms of jaundice are not characteristic of BPYV alone. They can be caused by nutritional deficiencies (in magnesium for example) or by other viruses ( Cucurbit yellow stunting disorder virus - CYSDV, Cucurbit Aphid Borne Yellows Polerovirus - CABYV). Yellowing associated with mosaics can also be caused by Zucchini yellow mosaic virus (ZYMV) or Cucumber vein yellowing virus (CVYV).
