EMDV
Eggplant mottle and stunt virus
The eggplant mottle and stunt virus belongs to the genus Nucleorhabdovirus . Viral particles or virions are bacilliform and enveloped, measuring 80-90 x 220-230 nm (Figure 1).

- Symptoms and mode of transmission of virions
This virus causes thinning and yellowing of the veins of young leaflets. The latter are also small, distorted and coiled (Figures 2 to 5). Plant growth is reduced or even blocked. They end up being sterile, and the growing fruits become poorly colored and more or less wrinkled to blistered (Figure 6).
It would be transmitted by leafhoppers belonging to the genus Agallia .
- Main characteristics
This virus, described for the first time on eggplant in 1969 in Italy, has sometimes been called “ Tomato vein yellowing virus ” or “ Pittosporum vein yellowing virus ” in several countries of the Mediterranean Basin. It is in the latter that it first spread: Turkey, Greece, Maghreb, Portugal, France, Canary Islands. It is now also found in Jordan, Afghanistan, Iran, Bulgaria Observed on tomato during the 1980s, it was isolated on eggplant and pepper. It does not currently constitute a major threat to these crops in France.
The EMDV is rather confined to the Solanaceae, attacking tobacco, eggplant, pepper, potato, Solanum nigrum, S. sodomaeum It also affects cucumber, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Lonicera sp., Pittosporum tobira and Capparis spinosa .
- Protection methods
You can consult the protective measures indicated to control CMV , in particular in terms of elimination of virus-infected plants and reservoir plants.
Of insecticide treatments * may be needed to control leafhopper populations on tomato, and therefore limit the impact of EMDV. A number of products can be used in this regard on the aerial parts: alphamethrin, cyfluthrin, deltamethrin, lambda cyhalothrin ( e-Phy ).
* Chemical control : As the number of pesticides available for a given use is constantly changing, we advise you to always confirm your choice by consulting the e-phy site of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries which is an online catalog of plant protection products and their uses, fertilizers and growing media approved in France. This also applies to all biological products based on microorganisms or natural substances.
