Alternaria spp.

Alternariosis

Several species of Alternaria are rife with vegetables, attacking seedlings in nurseries (particularly when the seeds are contaminated), or adult plants, especially at the time of fruit enlargement, causing lesions on leaves, especially lower leaves, but also on other aerial organs such as stems and fruits.

These fungi are characterized by multi-cellular spores septate in both directions, brown and rather large, and most often provided with a filiform appendage. These are formed on solitary conidiophores. They should not be confused with Stemphylium spp.
